What´s the meaning of Cigarral?
Etymologically speaking, many people connect it with the geological nature of the land (stony place or slate quarry). Other people connect it with the vegetation and it is also connected with Arabic terms 'small house or springs place', but nowadays, it is popularly known as the abundance of cicadas on summer.
The Cigarral Santo Ángel Custodio's origin dates back to the Arabic domination, although what we now know, was built on 17th century and this is the oldest one. This Cigarral is situated next to the Tajo river, in a wide property of 10 hectares placed outside the city. Undoubtedly, this Cigarral has a great historical value where there is a mix the 3 cultures (Jewish, Islamic and Christian). Many writers like Garcilaso de la Vega or Tirso de Molina were inspired with its gardens (Arabic origin). Another writer inspired in it was Fina Calderón, one of the last owners.
